While researching education in SL for the Cheshire Academy Admissions Department final project, I found a website which listed all of the schools, museums, libraries, and educational organizations that have an SL presence. I checked some of the urls and found common usages amongst the academic departments using SL which include the following:
-to gather data for social scientists/researchers on how people/cultures communicate
-for RL training: Idaho for public and governmental safety training, Hong Kong Polytech for new student orientation and for existing students in their Hotel & Restaurant Management program
-included in their digital media programs
-used in business schools: University of Houston’s Money & Design is a Design Economics course of real live modeling of business practices in a virtual world where designers can try their design
-for distance learning to provide a more “real life” classroom experience
-Univerity of Edinburgh utilizes SL in several departments: School of Education has been using Second Life since September 2006 to provide teaching spaces for the distance MSc in E-learning programme. The School of Management MBA course has also been an early adopter. The Artificial Intelligence Applications Institute (AIAI) in the School of Informatics has been using early MUDs/MOOs and virtual collaborative spaces for over 2 decades in its work, and exploring the use of Second Life since mid 2006 to explore persistent task-supporting intelligent agents, AI applications, AI technology transfer and collaborative working in virtual community sims, especially for emergency response. The School of Arts, Culture and the Environment (ACE) is exploring Branded Meeting Places in Virtual Worlds.
- public policy and planning: Tufts uses SL for their Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning department curriculum
- Science and technology programs that are driving the “innovation economy” of the future. Bentley College’s Natural and Applied Sciences Department offers courses that focus on the interests of business students, enabling them to apply knowledge of scientific principles, methods, and recent discoveries to their personal and professional lives.
- Teaching and learning in Education: Department of Educational Technology, Boise State University, offers courses in their Master’s degree in Educational Technology
- Economics: Cornell University’s Johnson School Professor Rob Bloomfield uses SL as his classroom for a course that guides his students through complex economics arising in the “metaverse” of virtual worlds.
